New in Town: Black Dirt, Casual Animal, The Russell

In the New in Town series, editor Anna Petrow shares a few spots new to the local scene– from food (of course), to coffee, shopping, and live music, the series will provide a glimpse into KC's latest and greatest.

Black Dirt

Jonathan Justus recently opened his highly anticipated restaurant on Main, and let me just say: it was well worth the wait. The inspired decor sets the scene for his signature show-stopping meals. Metal cutouts at the entrance were inspired by a leaf Justus found that had eaten by a Japanese beetle, and the tree root chandelier came with him from Smithville. But the food, as always, is the star. From the    duck confit fritters to the roast duck with homemade plum sauce, and even the raved-about burger– Black Dirt’s menu is not to be missed.

The newest brewery on the block in the Crossroads has excellent beer– just ask Little Fixations– but I might be even more excited about the space. Plenty of room, glowing string lights, games to play, and a little patio to enjoy in the warmer months means I’ll be posting up with a tasting or two and bringing all my friends.

I’ll just come out and say it: I’m in love with this place, and so is the whole Made in KC team. The Russell feels like the kind of gem you discover in LA or Portland (the owners carefully curated the space with antiques from the West Bottoms), and we’re lucky to have it new to the food scene here in KC. The chimichurri steak is perfect on top of their Heirloom salad with wood fire grilled veggies, and their chocolate chip cookies are A.MAZ.ING.
