West Bottoms: Always Growing. Always Changing.

There’s one neighborhood in KC that seems to be perpetually offering a variety of options for getting out and about — The West Bottoms. New things pop up and old things return, and it doesn’t quite get the credit it deserves for the social luxuries it provides. Here are a few places we think are worthy of your time and attention that are definitely worth the trip.

Blade and Timber

For those looking to harness your inner lumberjack (or lumberjane) this is a great spot. The flagship location is a little off the beaten path but does offer ten lanes of axe-throwing revelry. From the same owners as Breakout KC, this fine establishment is great for small groups or parties. They’ve wisely elected to keep libations out of the hands of their axe wielders, but they do have a variety of other snacks, chips and drinks available for purchase. Additionally, they have welcoming staff that help coach on proper throwing techniques and ensure that everyone has a safe, yet entertaining time.

The Golden Ox
1600 Genessee St., #110 Kansas City, MO 64102

Golden Ox was originally established in 1949 but ultimately had to close its doors in December of 2014. The owners of Voltaire, across the street, saw fit to renovate and reopen this historic Kansas City beef luxury spot in June of 2018. Right next door to the ever popular Stockyards Brewing Co., they offer eleven different signature cocktails and nine different cuts of steak, ranging from five to 34 ounces. The most monumental of these has been dubbed The Drover. Upon reopening, Golden Ox eschewed its previous Goodfellas vibe for a classy, intimate feel. Make sure to allow some time to welcome back this classic Kansas City favorite.

The Campground

The most recent addition on our list, opened in December of 2018 is The Campground. It offers a wide range of options when it comes to their beverages. Let’s run the numbers. Nine signature cocktails, nine different beers, and thirteen different wines, all waiting to be experienced. Our waiter informed us the drinks they are most proud of are the Old Fashioned, their different martinis, and The Big Iron, which is made up of Cynar 70, Reposado tequila, vermouth, and mezcal. They also have a small but eclectic food menu. We sampled their s’more, which was unlike any s’more I had ever tasted before. Be sure to keep The Campground in mind for spring and summer once they have the chance to open their garage doors to the patio. It looks like it would be perfect for a drink after a long Friday.
