Profile: Shop 90Six
Meet Marissa Miller: fashion and textile designer, KC casual wear icon and self-made business woman.
When did you learn to sew, and what first drew you to fashion and textiles?
I learned how to sew in my fashion and fabrics class my sophomore year of high school, and I’ve always loved fashion, and knew I wanted to work in the fashion industry. I love sewing projects: starting with a lifeless piece of fabric and turning it into a fabulous top, skirt, or literally whatever you want to make.
How did you start your business?
At first I was selling distressed/vintage denim to my close friends, but I had more I wanted to create and sell– so I taught myself how to screen print, make jewelry, and started sewing more so that I could offer more products.
Where do you get inspiration for new styles?
My favorite place to get inspiration is from flea markets and estate sales. I love drawing inspiration from the 80’s and 90’s fashion trends and giving a modern spin on them.
Do you sew everything out of your own home, or do you have a production space?
As of now I’ve been sewing and printing everything out of my home, but I've been waiting for the right space to become available.

How do you know when a particular design will sell really well?
I have no idea what will do well or not, but I've found the more pleased I am with a product, the better it does. I try not to overthink it too much.
What has been the design you're most proud of so far?
I’m most proud of the “Be Nice First” tee shirt and crewneck– not only has it been the best seller for us, but it gives me hope that it’s making a positive impact on people and the people they come across. I just recently shipped one to London and I was so happy that the message was getting that far out there.
Tell us your thoughts on the creative scene in KC. Do you do any collaborations with other makers?
I love the creative scene in KC– it’s so inspiring to see others doing what they love and having so many unique perspectives co-exist in Kansas City. I have a couple collaborations in the works and can’t wait to work with more creatives in KC.
How has social media played a role in the success of your business? Any tips for small business owners looking to connect with new customers?
Social media has been fun and challenging for me. No matter how hard you try to make the perfect picture or content, it’s much more rewarding to be authentic.
What has been the most challenging part about operating your business during the pandemic?
The hardest part for me is not being able to have Pop-Up Shops. I had one planned for May and really looked forward to seeing my customers and creating a really cool experience for them. And now I have no idea when I will be able to have one.
Do you have any advice for budding entrepreneurs?
Stick with it. It’s not an easy walk in the park, but it’s a beautiful experience and I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
