KC Tiny Greenhouse is a greenhouse operating out of a tiny house tucked away in Midtown, Kansas City. The Tiny Greenhouse specializes in all kinds of plants any plant guru might need in their home, as well as local art and hand-made goods. Owners Austin Mosier and Tristan Carlson chatted with me about their business and shared some highlights from the year:

First of all, congrats on owning KC Tiny Greenhouse! It is such a cute space and has been getting quite the attention around Kansas City. When did you start Tiny Greenhouse and what led you to the journey of opening your own Greenhouse?

KC Tiny Greenhouse was brought to life by our business partner Christina. We connected with her while we were living in Florida, where we had access to all these beautiful tropical plants, and we partnered with her to bring some of these tropicals back to KC. From there, she has given us the space to grow this tiny idea into something more.

What type of plants can be found at the Greenhouse year-round?

We carry everything from classic house plants to unique tropicals and collector plants! We want people of all skill levels to be able to shop with us and find something they are interested in.

Tell us all about the fun pop-ups you’ve been hosting!

We have really enjoyed partnering with other great local businesses! Getting to interact with people and talk plants has been a highlight of our year. We are so thankful to Blip and Hand and Land for hosting us this season and always taking safety seriously. We are very much looking forward to partnering with more local businesses in 2021!

What have been some highlights since you started this business?

The biggest highlight has been the support we have gotten and the community we have found. We have had the chance to meet so many great people this year through a common interest in plants, and it has brought us the best customer base we could ask for.

The other highlight of our year was KC Tiny Plant Box, a monthly plant subscription box that we put together this spring and summer to make plants more accessible to people staying home. This coming spring we plan to bring the KC Tiny Plant Box back and even better than before!

How does being based in Kansas City impact your business?

Kansas City is a city rich with amazing local businesses! We have always felt that the people here are so supportive and encouraging of small business, and that’s the reason we have been able to have such a successful year. We are so thankful to everyone who has supported us!

What did it look like developing KC Tiny Greenhouse’s aesthetic?

We just wanted to create a space that is fun, positive, and energetic. Natural elements with pops of color and cascading in plants is basically the vibe.

Tell us all about the location!

We operate out of a tiny greenhouse tucked away in  Midtown! The greenhouse is on the same property as a modular tiny house designed by our partner Christina. The greenhouse provides our variety of plants as well as art and handmade goods from local artists and makers.

Any goals for the business going into the New Year?

We want to continue connecting with the KC plant community and meet new people. It’s a goal to continue to bring a unique selection of plants to the KC area through the greenhouse and through the plant subscription box. Eventually, we hope to be able to host events and classes when it is safe to gather again.

What obstacles have you gotten through pertaining to Covid-19 this year?

During lockdown, we did appointments only and have continued to require masks and safety precautions since businesses have opened back up. All of our guests have been very cooperative and great.

Okay, one last question– we have to know! Favorite plant and why?

We’re obsessed with most philodendrons! We have also been adding a few Hoya varieties to our personal collection that have quickly been becoming our favorite.
