Sushi Guide: 10 Spots to Try in KC
Making it your mission to try all the sushi in the metro? This guide is just what you need!
For a landlocked city, KC boasts more great sushi spots than you’d expect. It will probably take me until the end of time to try them all, but I’ve made it my mission to work my way through the metro. I’ve included my personal top ten below, and additional spots in every corner of the city. Find one in your area and let me know what you think!
No matter where you go, don’t forget the sake– and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of this article for a long list of many more sushi spots in the metro!
Blue Sushi | 4705 Rainbow Blvd., Westwood, KS
With happy hour every day, including ALL day on Sundays, you can feast for less on a huge menu of drinks, apps, sashimi, nigiri, maki, and even dessert. They have vegan, gluten-free, and “not raw” options to suit everyone’s needs. I suggest starting with the Cherry Bomb - bigeye tuna on top of rice tempura, with serrano, sriracha, togarashi, and ponzu sauce. It’s the perfect spicy treat to wake up your taste buds.
Brookside Sushi | 408 East 63rd St, Kansas City, MO
Follow Brookside Sushi on social media and you’ll be met with a new and enticing special on a near-daily basis. Dining in is great, but my favorite way to enjoy Brookside Sushi is to order it to go for a picnic at Loose Park on a nice day. Pick a shady spot and settle in for a great meal.
Bob Wasabi | Previously at 1726 W. 39th St., Kansas City, MO
Ok, to be fair, Bob Wasabi is now closed. However, it would be a huge miss not to mention this spot as it was one of my all-time favorites and was rated one of the top 50 sushi bars in the U.S. and Canada on Yelp. They’ve communicated that they’re looking to reopen in a new, TBD spot by Fall, so this recommendation is less of a “go try them” and more of a “keep an eye out for when they’re back.”
Jun’s | 7660 State Line Rd, Prairie Village, KS
One of the most established sushi spots in the city, Jun’s has been rolling for more than 43 years. It’s no wonder it has stood the test of time with its inviting space and delicious food. The Ocean roll is at the top of my list, and I love to enjoy it at the sushi bar while watching the talented chefs expertly prepare each order.
Sushi Karma | 5820 Johnson Dr, Mission, KS
My favorite way to enjoy Sushi Karma is to belly up to the bar for happy hour. I’ve been known to show up midafternoon and leave very happy many hours - and rolls - later. The Negi Hamachi is my favorite happy hour roll - the perfection is in its simplicity.
Kabuki Sushi | 333 W Meyer Blvd, Kansas City, MO
Blink and you’ll miss this great spot as you drive down Wornall. Located on the first floor of the Meyer West Condo building, Kabuki Sushi is a small space with a big reputation for quality sushi. My table of six ordered enough for not just one, but two boats (plus appetizers) because we couldn’t pick between all the mouthwatering options. Kabuki has a family feel that’s warm and welcoming - like they opened the restaurant just for you that evening. I’ll be back time and time again.
Sushi House | 5041 W 117th St, Leawood, KS
Sushi House is tucked away on the north side of Town Center. For the full experience, ask for one of the private rooms where you can dine in style with up to 5 of your closest friends. I recommend starting with the seaweed or crab salad - both favorites - before diving into your sushi selections.
Prime Sushi | 4980 Main St, Kansas City, MO
With a big patio and ample indoor space, Prime is ready to welcome you whether you’re in the mood for sunshine or AC. The Yellowtail Killer Roll and Royals Dragon Roll are always a hit, but don’t be afraid to branch out. There’s something for everyone on this menu.
Sayachi Sushi | 6322 Brookside Plaza, Kansas City, MO
Looking for a cute, quiet patio in Brookside? You’ve found it. Join friends for a summer evening on the Sayachi patio to experience why it’s a staple in a neighborhood known for great food.
Sushi UNI | 12841 W 87th Street Parkway, Lenexa, KS
Some of the best sushi in town paired with extremely reasonable prices makes this spot a must. With rolls starting at $3.50 (yes, really), you can take a date and still get out for less than $20...depending on how hungry you are, of course. I count “The Hulk” - unfortunately not $3.50 - as one of the best rolls in the city. It combines spicy yellowtail, avocado, and jalapeno in green soy paper with honey wasabi sauce and eel sauce. Worth every penny!
