Without the cheery murmur of nearby tables at a crowded happy hour, the dim hush of a movie theater, or even the lazy office gossip of a Tuesday morning in the world as it used to be, the winter of 2020 going into 2021 has taken on a serious "Groundhog Day" vibe - which is hardly the comedy that Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell made it out to be!

Before there was the prospect of another Chief's Super Bowl win on the horizon, it seemed liked there was really nothing to look forward to and that every day would be exactly the same from now until, say, April.

Although things have certainly been spiced up a bit by the impending showdown in Tampa, it still seems like something is missing from our winter social calendars here in KC. We took the liberty of rounding up some virtual options to help you break up the monotony of this long COVID winter:

Missing the arts?

  • Rent a film from The Tivoli Cinema at the Nelson-Atkins ($10 -$12/rental, current showings here). One current offering, Another Round, is a comedy that explores what might happen if low-level inebriation fueled all of our workdays; while the reason I jump delves into the minds of non-verbal Autistic people around the world.

  • Also at the Nelson - Saturday morning Sketch Club. Up next on February 6: learn to draw your pets! You can probably even draw darling Fluffy in a Mahomes jersey if you really want to get in the spirit for the big game.

  • Got kids? The Kemper Museum's Tots on Tuesdays programming has gone virtual! Register for the next Zoom session (10:30 to 11:30 on February 16) by February 10 to get all necessary supplies mailed straight to you!

Aching for a date night?

  • Travel to Argentina, Spain, and Mexico with Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen's Passport Series (all three remaining destinations $265, Argentina on February 5 $95, additional food/wine pricing as listed). Enjoy four small plates, wine and spirit pairings, and a culinary and musical tour of each destination without hopping on a plane - or even getting out of your pajamas!

  • The Kansas City Symphony is still playing and you can stream concerts live or at your leisure from home with their new all-digital platform (free for current subscription holders, annual pass at $399/year for all concerts for new digital-only subscribers). Upcoming season highlights include "Hollywood!", featuring some of the most iconic music from cinema (March 7, from the Pops Series), and Copland's Appalachian Spring (April 11, from the Classical Series).
