Weekend Series: 39th Street
Some of the best spots in Kansas City are nestled between State Line Road and Summit on 39th Street. 39th Street houses attractions for all ages, from bookstores and ice cream shops to BBQ and bars.
Park anywhere on the street and start your adventure off at Prospero’s Books, a multi-story bookstore full of every book of every subject you could ever imagine. Sure, you can come here for books that can easily be found on Amazon, but also be sure to check out their unique titles include Permanent New Yorkers: A Biographical Guide to the Cemeteries of New York City to The Fine Art of Flirting. They also keep shelves outside of their shop full of one, two, and three dollar books nearly all hours of the day. Slide a few dollars under the door if they aren’t there, and take home a new book!
For lunch, check out Aladdin Cafe, on the corner of 39th and Wyoming, for a fresh Mediterranean meal. Head out on a nice day and try to catch a seat on their casual patio – you can’t beat it. Their hummus will be a winner for everyone, but one of their gyros makes for the perfect lunch when you’re tired of normal sandwiches. They have an extensive vegetarian menu as well!
Head east down 39th and you’ll find a KC staple, Donna’s Dress Shop. Donna keeps a collection of both new and vintage clothing, so you’ll be sure to find something unique. From bright prints to vintage swimsuits, you will definitely find your new summer staple.
Finally, head back up to Miami Ice to cool off with some shaved ice or an ice cream cone! You absolutely cannot beat the tropical theme of the shop or their never-ending selections of shaved ice flavors and ice cream toppings (the highly Instagram-able space doesn’t hurt, either). Catch a seat on the patio and enjoy the scenes of 39th Street, and don’t miss their adorable pink flamingo on the side of the building or the pink door in the back for a mini-photoshoot.
There is always more to check out on this street, so be sure to keep wandering (we have our eyes on a taco window)!
