KC Local Eats' Takeout Roundup
KC’s favorite foodie Instagram, @KClocaleats, rounds up a few takeout favorites for you to enjoy at home:
Dinner at home doesn’t have to be boring– try something new and support a local restaurant! Here, some favorites of KC Local Eats, one of our favorite resources for local foodies:
Who: Thai Orchid
Where: Mission
6504 Martway St
What to order: You’ll want to start off with some Crispy Squid & Crab Rangoon - they both come with an amazingly unique plum dipping sauce that compliments each appetizer perfectly. The Orchid Signature dish with either tofu or chicken is pretty spectacular, especially for all those peanut lovers out there. Fried Chicken at a Thai restaurant might seem a little odd, but we’re here to tell you it will blow your mind. Their Pad Thai is regarded by many as one of the best in the city, you should try it for yourself and see.
Who: Buffalo State Pizza
Who: Buffalo State Pizza
Where: Downtown OP & downtown KC
7901 Santa Fe Dr.
What to order: The Maverick - The toppings sound interesting together (meatball, spicy capicola, salami, banana peppers and provolone) and you might skim over it completely, but it’s a flavor explosion that’s pretty hard to replicate. Believe me– I’ve tried! Green Queen - so dang good you won’t even notice you’re eating a pie of vegetables, truly. La Tomatina has been on repeat at our house during Covid quarantine - it’s their take on a margherita pizza and it’s delicious!
Who: Sinbad’s
Where: Overland Park
7002 W 83rd St.
What to Order: THE HUMMUS!!!! It’s the creamiest hummus you’ll ever have, and I really don’t want to know what makes it so creamy- let’s just keep it a secret because I’m sure my arteries don't want to know. You can’t go wrong with a traditional Greek Gyro platter and Sinbad’s does it justice, plus you can customize it with your choice of sauce on any dish. If you’re craving a sandwich, the Shawarmania Sandwich is something you don’t want to snooze on. It’s a really good sandwich, I mean realllllly good.
Who: Bay Boy Specialty Sandwiches
Where: West Plaza
4706 Holly St.
What to order: Run away with The Bandit (roast beef with raspberry jam and horseradish), and you’ll be one happy eater. It’s so unique and all the flavors come together to make something indescribable and delicious. The KimCheese is one heavenly vegetarian sandwich that isn’t for the faint of heart. If you’re skeptical about Kim-Chi you can always order the KimCheese hold the Kim-Chi, but that’s your prerogative.
Who: Chai Shai
Where: Brookside
651 E 59th St.
What to order: You could make a perfectly satisfying meal by ordering the entire appetizer menu. Trust me, I know from experience. If nothing else, you absolutely must order the spicy mango. The combination of sweet and spicy is incredible. For entrees try the pakora curry, lamb korma, or masala paneer. The mango shake is incredibly refreshing any time of year but especially on a hot summer day!
Who: Ixtapa
Where: Overland Park/North KC
7305 W 95th St.
What to order: Start with the queso fundido. It takes cheese dip to the next level. The dinner menu is vast and we’ve never tried something that wasn’t great. Favorites include the tacos and chile rellenos. If you want to try something new, check out the enchiladas de nopales.
Who: KC Taco Company
Where: River Market
520 Walnut St.
What to order: Tacos, obviously. But be prepared to step out of your comfort zone. Spicy Ahi Tuna Tacos, Korean Pork Tacos, and Cauliflower Tacos are just a few of the interesting selections available. But the real MVP at KC Taco Co. is the full cocktail menu, available for carry out. Choose from liters or single servings of Sangria, Paloma, or my favorite; the charred pineapple-rita.
