Profile: Perfectly Mixed
These twins are mixing up some seriously delicious sweets!
Hey peeps! Many of y’all know that I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I had the delicious opportunity of meeting the Rojas twins at one of their pop-ups. This baking duo was born and raised on Kansas City’s Westside. They are the 3rd generation of Rojas’ who’s family is originally from Jalisco Guadalajara, Mexico (cue Elvis Presley’s GUADALAJARA song).
FUN FACT: Their abueltio has been on the West Side for 80+ years! The twins come from a mixed background of Mexican and African American. Monique and Melonie learned how to cook by watching their grandparents in the kitchen, listening to stories of their grandpa who worked at Wishbone, and also making cakes. Their abuelita was in the catering business and from there, they took a liking to being in the kitchen.
The Rojas twins are both full-time mothers, spouses and work professionally outside of their homes, running their delectable custom confections by night. Melonie has degrees in management and technology and Monique in healthcare management. As you can imagine, they have a full schedule and at times finding their inner push can be extremely trying. They officially began their business venture at the beginning of the pandemic and in the midst of the George Floyd tragedy. This very much touched them as mothers and also because of their biracial background. They wanted a business name that really expressed who they are to the core. They have struggled at times with not feeling Mexican enough or Black enough, however always being proud to be both. With them both being twins and in baking everything needs to be “perfectly mixed”...like a lightbulb they both said “PERFECTLY MIXED, that’s IT”! They both loved the name and what it represents.
They have developed their recipes offering custom sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, cakes, hot chocolate bombs, cake pops and much more while still learning and innovating. Even though they started during the pandemic, they found people to be very receptive of their porch pickup option. It was a bit difficult in the beginning to find the perfect scheduling and customers ready to trust complete strangers, but luckily it has been fantastic. They understood that cancellations and rescheduling would be more common due to Covid outbreaks and learned to just roll with it. Due to the pandemic they were also having a hard time finding reasonably priced commissary kitchens so they could expand their business, but they researched and finally found exactly what they were searching for.
This opened the doors for their continued success: they now sell their cake pops in SIX Made In KC Cafes, and they were named one of the 2022 KC Chamber Small Business Superstars! The Rojas twins have also been actively looking for a brick and mortar, and hope for it to be in the West Side neighborhood. In the meantime, be sure you’re following them on social media for a chance to visit one of their pop-ups, and head to their website to place custom orders.
