A Rendezvous to Remember — Introducing Voo Lounge

The stunning piano and cocktail bar breathes new life into an all-but-forgotten lounge of Hotel Muehlebach.

For nearly 40 years, the lounge bar within the historic Hotel Muehlebach building sat vacant. Once a bustling and vibrant hangout for the likes of Harry Truman, Tom Pendergast, Truman Capote and more, this gathering spot for the greats has only gathered dust as of late. Its illustrious allure was all but lost in Kansas City lore. That is, until now. Renovated and revitalized, Voo Lounge blends a modern experience with the look and feel of yesteryear — making this new cocktail bar a can’t-miss.

Located at 1214 Baltimore, Voo Lounge (paying homage to the bar’s original namesake Rendezvous) has everything you’d want a piano and cocktail bar to encompass: an abundance of warmth and ambiance with ample history and a shroud of secrecy. Live music reverberates throughout the space while cocktails crafted by master mixologists offer a unique and delicious take on the classics. For a space that sat lifeless for so long, a new heartbeat emanates within these four walls.

Upon passing through the art-deco-inspired revolving door leading into Voo Lounge, you’re immediately greeted by the maître d' and a warm welcome. As conversations abound, the energy is fresh but also familiar. A vast wall of liquor vaults (available to reserve for storing your finest reserves) and decadent decor bathed in candlelight serve as the backdrop. The bar in the distance is Gatsby-esque while resident pianist Will O’Keefe performs center stage, tickling the ivories and playing both familiar favorites and mainstream hits.

The drinks are, in a word, incredible — pleasing to both eye and palate. The presentation is stunning, only surpassed by taste and creativity. Room for Dessert is like key lime pie in cocktail form, whereas the Rendezvous packs a sweet punch as it’s accompanied by a mini whipped cream cone. Regardless of your spirit of choice, you’ll certainly enjoy the delicious options to choose from. Small bites and shareables are also on the menu, so grab a few options for the table. Or for just yourself, there’s no judgment here.

I’m a strong supporter of establishments that can bring a community together and Voo Lounge has every element of doing just that. The history, the comfort, the attention to detail — everything within the space makes you want to plan a date night, bring a friend or introduce a family member. But, as usual, don’t take my word for it — book a table, grab your people and enjoy this incredible addition to downtown’s cocktail and music scene — Voo Lounge.
