That’s what the world has come to expect from Effing Candle Co., a candle company orchestrated and fearlessly led by Birdie Hansen with the help of her partner, part-time cohorts, and her cat Doodles. The brand has been dazzling fans online for years with its spunky product names (i.e. “A Ray of Effing Sunshine,” “Hot Girl Summer,” “Focused AF”), and Kansas City is lucky to be home to the bright, inspired shop in midtown.

Effing Candle Co. is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 3703 Main Street, and specializes in naturally scented wood wick candles. They also produce and sell candle refills, wax melts, air fresheners, and pet toys.

The focal point as soon as you as you walk into the shop is the disco ball, center stage. It hangs between the cash wrap area, and the production space, making the shop feel like a party as soon as you step in.

To the right as you walk in, a small platform. I once watched New York cuties Bandits On The Run play a fundraiser show right there, surrounded by joyful things on a Friday night.

The shop’s location at 37th and Main Street - while historically centrally located and easily accessible - has been buried under construction of some form or another for years. Right now, crews are working on the line for the trolley expansion. But Effing Candle Co. has also been riddled with a flurry of bad luck over the years, including break-ins and storm damage. And still, the shop opens every week to deliver some of the most endearing scents and wisecracks to excited fans.
