Profile: 9th & State
Discover the latest hangout to capture our hearts in the West Bottoms
Down-to-earth. Quirky. Welcoming to all. If I had to sum up 9th & State, the newly-opened yet historic hangout in the West Bottoms, that’s how I’d best describe it. But there’s so much more than what meets the eye when it comes to 9&S. The location, charm and overall experience is truly defined by stepping foot through the door and immersing yourself in the fun.
9th & State may have only opened its doors to the public in mid-2021, but the space it occupies has been an integral part of Kansas City history for more than a century. Originally built by Pabst Blue Ribbon in 1911, the building has served as a focal point on what was once dubbed “the wettest block in the world” — where alcohol flowed like water during prohibition and supplied the dry state of Kansas with its libations.
But the history doesn’t end there. Prohibition is synonymous with Tom Pendergast, so it’s only appropriate that this building was once home to the infamous Kansas City political boss. Infuse Charlie Parker, some Kansas City jazz, and a casino, and you’ve got yourself quite a story to tell — all in one establishment. In fact, I could write an entire article about the space itself.
Historical relevance aside, what owner Heather Hamilton and her husband Sean Smith have already cultivated is an asset to Kansas City. 9&S focuses on bolstering the community — showcasing local artists, musicians, organizations and providing a comfortable hangout for those in the service industry. With a handful of local fundraisers already under their belt, it’s clear that their passion not only lies in creating a safe and fun space for everyone, but helping support programs they have a passion for.
Okay, let’s dive into the space itself. I’m already a huge proponent for the West Bottoms, so any reason to make my way into the neighborhood has a huge advantage. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the intricate, hand-laid penny-tile floor that is bound to show up on your friends’ Insta Stories. The walls are lined with works of art that have interesting backstories, occasionally broken up with quirky, meme-worthy images and paintings (also, for the guys reading this, make sure you check out the last stall in the bathroom and ask Heather for the explanation). Multiple ping-pong tables are available, so wrangle your friends and organize a weekend tournament.
And then there’s the safe. Dating back to 1931 — when the Antlers Club was in full swing with two floors of entertainment, multiple bars and a casino — it sits in the very back corner of the bar next to the original cooler. It’s unopened and the combination is unknown. Its contents (whatever they may be) are protected by tear gas, which inspired one of the seasonal cocktails -- the Boobie Trap. If there’s no other reason you want to visit, let this be it. It’s so incredibly cool.
For the drinks — while there are plenty of local and domestic beers and interesting wines stocked, it’s the spirit-based menu that is most impressive to me. Caro Thomas is the mastermind mixologist who concocts these cocktails and they’re well worth the trip. The Ape Hanger and The Gambler are my two favorite drinks on the current menu, but make sure to go grab a DILLIGAF and don’t forget to ask Sean about the name. I was also able to sample some of the new Fall menu as well — y’all are in for quite a treat, but I have to keep those on the DL for now.
9th & State is special and especially unique. For Kansas City history buffs, it’s a no-brainer to add to your list of must-visit locations. For anyone looking for a new hangout to truly hang out, 9th & State is a space you have to experience yourself. It’s relaxed and radiates good vibes throughout every distinct corner. But don’t take my word for it, go grab a drink, say ‘hello’ and enjoy one of the coolest new spots in KC.
