Exploring Cheval: A Parisian Escape in Downtown Kansas City

One of Kansas City’s newest cocktail lounges offers an elevated French experience in our own backyard.

Embodying culture and decadence, Cheval (pronounced sha-velle) is an immaculate cocktail lounge that feels as if it was plucked straight from Paris. Translated, the bar’s namesake means ‘horse’ in French, which not only exemplifies a steady and trusted relationship but also gives a nod to owner Heather White’s passion for equestrianism. Across the street, Cheval’s sister restaurant — the popular, French-inspired bistro Tailleur — serves as a natural extension for an incredible night out. Both offer an elevated experience and blend effortlessly into each other.

Within Cheval, while gazing around the candle-and-chandelier-lit room, you’ll notice how the smallest of details are thoughtfully curated for both atmosphere and experience. The trim on the bar, the paint on the walls (a rich hunter green, again inspired by Heather’s love for horses), the plush seating and even the delicate dishes your charcuterie is plated on — everything is purposeful. And as someone who appreciates ambiance and a sense of warmth, Cheval exudes this and so much more.

What further complements Cheval is the impeccable team that Heather has assembled to make your experience special and unique. Katie and Erick — the masterminds behind the beautiful menu of cocktails, bubbles, snack selection and bar — bring a passion that’s palpable, ensuring that you have a wonderful time and come again with friends or loved ones (something I’ve now done on multiple occasions). William, the bar’s GM, goes above and beyond for each guest that walks through Cheval’s door, ensuring glasses are full and every patron is happy. It’s incredibly apparent that each of these four are tenured and passionate about hospitality because of how much they care about you and your experience.

Speaking of that brilliant menu, its pages offer a curated list of wines (by the glass or bottle), cocktails and snacks — all three of which I’d certainly recommend. The food options range from charcuterie boards to bar mixes, cheese plates to desserts. And although they’re meant to be shared, the presentation and quality of these dishes spark the realization that sharing is hard sometimes, so you may have everyone ordering a plate for themselves.

Having been to Paris on multiple occasions, there is something truly genuine and unique about Cheval. Its dimly-lit amber glow lends way to the greatest of conversations and experiences in town. This is precisely what Heather had in mind when creating the space — a place to cherish those moments with those closest to you. And for the few short weeks it’s been open, it’s easily become one of my new go-to destinations because of how special it is. But, as always, please do not take my word for it. Grab your friends, order some bubbles and lose yourself (and track of time) in Cheval — one of Kansas City’s best new bars.
