Shawnee KS continues to transform, thanks to an influx of innovative small businesses

Shawnee, KS has become a hotspot for food, beer, and cocktails. If you haven’t explored this area, consider your weekend plans booked. The corner of Nieman Road and Johnson Drive has you covered from breakfast to post-dinner drinks - with plenty of patio time in the afternoon.

Aztec Shawnee Theater | 11119 Johnson Drive

The Aztec Shawnee Theater’s classic marquee gives an instant rush of nostalgia when driving down Johnson Drive. After a 46 year closure, this long-standing landmark was renovated and reopened in 2021. The refurbished theater now hosts live shows, movies, and food trucks. Check the theater’s calendar to get tickets in advance.

District Pour House + Kitchen | 11101 Johnson Drive

After years in Waldo, District Pour House moved across town to the booming corner of Nieman Road and Johnson Drive. The house-infused spirits have found a home behind their new bar and are ready to be mixed into perfect cocktails. District Pour House is open every day, but Sunday brunch is a must.

Drastic Measures | 5817 Nieman Road

Fresh flavors in unique combinations are the specialty at DrasticMeasures, a cocktail-only bar. Popular choices like the Kill Bill - topped with a thai chili - are keeping folks lined up out the door. Trust me, it’s worth the wait. KC locals aren’t the only ones noticing Drastic Measures. It was a finalist for “Outstanding Bar” in the prestigious 2023 James Beard Awards.

Friction Beer Co. | 11018 Johnson Drive

Music leads the way at Friction Beer Co. A wall of cassette tapes and beers named from song lyrics greet guests when they arrive. However, the music doesn’t overshadow the tasty brews. They’re the newest brewery on the block, but they’re already making waves. Friction has been nominated for best new brewery and best locally-owned Kansas brewery through The Pitch KC 2023 Best of Kansas City.

Flying Cow Gelato | 11210 Johnson Drive

Gelato anyone? Nothing hits quite like a scoop of your favorite flavor on a sunny day. Flying Cow not only makes their gelato fresh every day, but they also provide tasty toppings made by their sister store, Annedore’s Fine Chocolates. Pop in to try a classic flavor…Or if you can’t decide, go for “The Heffer” - a 5-flavor sampler!

McLain's Market | 5833 Nieman Road

This Waldo-born bakery and cafe has made its mark all over the metro. The Shawnee location boasts many of the same favorites McLain’s loyalists have loved for years - including the crowd-favorite pepperjack burrito and chocolate chip cookie. The patio is dog friendly and has games to keep the young - or young at heart - occupied.

Mother Clucker | 5930 Nieman Road

Kylie and Derrick Foster fell in love with Nashville hot chicken during their time in culinary school and soon brought the heat to KC by opening a space in Parlor (Crossroads) and, later, Shawnee. “We love this community,” they told me. “Our passion for hot chicken is what makes the food so amazing, but our desire to know the people that eat our food, the small businesses next door, and to support our community in so many ways are what makes Mother Clucker special.” Whether you love spice or not, Mother Clucker has a hot chicken sandwich for your preferred heat level. I’m not brave enough to order “What the Cluck!” (the hottest), but report back to me if you do.

Servaes Brewing | 10921 Johnson Drive

This LGBTQ-owned brewery welcomes all - including your pups and families. A kid zone is right in the middle of this bright, happy space to keep the littles happy while you take your pick from several colorful taps at the bar. Servaes is the first brewery in Kansas owned and operated by a female head brewer. Not only is the beer #brewedbyagirl (as their neon sign celebrates), but the craft soda is also brewed in house. This is one spot that will keep the whole crew happy.

Sushi Mido | 6010 Nieman Road

When you think of “all you can eat,” sushi probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, Sushi Mido has changed the game with an option for endless sushi rolls. With 2 appetizers included, there’s almost no chance you’ll have room for dessert. Individual menu items are an option for anyone  who’s looking for a lighter meal.

Transport Brewery | 11113 Johnson Drive

Transport Brewery opened its doors in 2018 as the first microbrewery in Shawnee. Since then, their rotating taps and food truck partnerships have made this spot a favorite. Also offering wine, cider, prosecco, and non-alcoholic options, there is something everyone will enjoy. Kids and dogs are welcome!

Wild Child | 11022 Johnson Drive

Born from the same brain as Drastic Measures, Wild Child is an adventure in wine, cocktails, and no/low ABV specialties. Jay Sanders, owner of both, clearly has a knack for curating beautiful spaces and flavors. Make a reservation for the best chances of getting a spot.
