Start your day off right!

Breakfast sandwiches are a dime a dozen, it seems. New specials at every drive-thru you pass, over-salted biscuits that often harden before you can actually get to them. You want to start your day on the right foot, so finding a protein-heavy option like a breakfast sandwich can really help you out. But making sure the flavor is spectacular and the texture enticing, all while making your commute or – most likely – multitasking can be incredibly difficult.

Here are a few of our favorite morning sandwich options across the KC metro.

District Biskuits

If you enjoy a hearty biscuit breakfast, then District Biskuits might be your next spot to adventure to. Sure, they serve biscuits and gravy that has a unique and captivating flavor. But their biscuit sandwiches? Chef’s kiss.

The Wonder is an oversized, fluffy, crunchy-on-top biscuit holding together a giant fried chicken filet, fried egg, bacon, and American cheese. The fried chicken is some of the best in the city. Best enjoyed with a bit of maple syrup.

Mildred’s

Steamed eggs are at the heart of Mildred’s most popular breakfast sandwich, The Standard. Made with housemade dijon mayo on top of bacon, American and Swiss cheeses, and toast, this is the lightest – yet heartiest – meal out there. Fans suggest adding the chipotle aioli to elevate it even further.

Heirloom Bakery & Hearth

While I can’t leave Heirloom Bakery & Hearth without some sort of cheese loaf – their baked goods are incredible – their Croque Madame is a notable sandwich in the Kansas City breakfast sphere. Sourdough toast makes up either side of this gruyere cheese, smoked ham, and mustard topped with a béchamel and fried egg sandwich.

I know your mouth is watering.

McLain’s

People tend to rave about a sandwich called “The Farm” at McLain’s and, after trying it for myself, I’m going to have to agree. A crispy croissant loaded with eggs, potatoes, sausage, flavorful vegetables, avocado, and poblano spread. It was absolutely delightful, and lasted me two full meals.

Spokes Café

I have always found the menu at Spokes Café to be hearty and a little bit unique. I was lucky to visit the downtown location recently to visit with a friend. I enjoyed the French Toast Sandwich, which was held between pieces of delicious, sweet french toast. Maple syrup, American cheese, bacon, and scrambled eggs make this a classic of a sandwich that is incredibly filling and really well made.

Housewife Cafe & Bistro

If you head a little south of the city, you will find one of the cutest locally owned coffee shops, with an incredible lineup of unique baked goods and delicious sandwiches to try. The Bacon Gouda breakfast sandwich is a personal favorite, boasting egg frittata, gouda, bacon, tomato, arugula, and garlic aioli on a soft Ibis Ciabatta Bun. Pair it with a homemade toaster pastry or other cheese-based concoction. '

Meshuggah Bagels

If you, like me are down for an east coast style bagel at any point in time, then Meshuggah Bagels will be able to help you with that craving. An everything bagel with lox with capers and tomato really hits the spot most days. The whitefish salad is incredible, and delicious as breakfast or lunch on a fresh bagel, loaded with tomato, greens, and onion. (If you dare.)
