A collective of creatives and small businesses nestled in the heart of the West Bottoms brings new life and energy to supporting local.

Some of my favorite businesses reside in the West Bottoms. There’s something about the historic neighborhood and its raw, unapologetic aesthetic that constantly draws me in. So when a new business opens its doors and fully embraces the West Bottoms’ vibe, it quickly jumps onto my list of favorite spots. With that said, allow me to introduce you to 12th Street Post.

At the corner of 12th and Liberty in the West Bottoms, 12th Street Post opened in October 2022 and resides within the space once occupied by a post office (hence the establishment’s name). Owned and operated by Austin Mosier and Tristan Carlson, it’s easy to see that they’re incredibly passionate about what they do — both within the curation of their business and, more importantly, the supporting and bolstering of local artists and makers. At its heart, this is the foundation of 12th Street Post — giving a voice and space to our community’s creative minds to showcase their talents.

While the interior feels massive, it’s beautiful inside. Shards of natural light scatter across the room, illuminating the lively decor and making the space warm and incredibly inviting. Small pockets are dedicated to each local maker — nearly 100 in total — creating an artistic tapestry, interweaving paintings, ceramics, thrifting treasures, nostalgic clothing, potted plants, vintage home decorations and so much more. Whether shopping for yourself or discovering the perfect gift for friends and family, there are endless options to choose from.

What’s even more inspiring about 12th Street Post is that it not only provides space for local makers, it’s home to seven incredible (and incredibly unique) businesses:

  • Amity & Vine - a local salon with a stunning aesthetic, promoting inclusivity and positive vibes

  • Annie Austen - a dear friend and MIKCexplore contributor who creates hand-made jewelry and accessories

  • Motion House - a full-service production company doing insane videography and photography within the community

  • MackBecks - handmade jewelry and home decor that’s intricate, ornate and unique

  • Salt Flat Ceramics - locally-made, vibrant and unique ceramics

  • Untamed Supply - a recognizable name in the community for its fragrant soy-wax candles and incense (also owned by Austin and Tristan)

  • West Bottoms Plant Co. - all of the happiest plants your heart could desire

Supporting local brands and makers has become increasingly important for helping communities thrive. 12th Street Post is a shining example of doing just that — putting our Kansas City creatives front and center while offering the space to create, think and thrive. The work being done here is inspiring, but don’t take my word for it. The next time you’re in the West Bottoms, rally your friends, pick up a plant, grab a candle and experience this newest creative epicenter for yourself — 12th Street Post.
