Neighborhood Guide: Old Overland Park

Old OP is one of the city’s best gems: home to hot new spots, a nationally recognized farmers market & stellar shopping!

Affectionately known as “Old OP,” downtown Overland Park is a beloved area with both new and familiar staples. This guide will get you started, but don’t stop there. Explore the area on your own to understand why this adorable spot continues to thrive. While it’s booming with permanent businesses, I’d be remiss not to mention the nationally-recognized Farmers’ Market that’s held every Saturday and Wednesday. Go find something new to love in Old OP!

Eat & Drink

Taco Naco | 8220 Metcalf Avenue

Chef Fenanda Reyes had a vision to put her own spin on the many flavors of Mexico. Offering tacos, burritos, nachos, tostadas, and more, the vision has become a reality. Put this one on your list - you don’t want to miss what Kansas City Magazine called the “Best New Restaurant” in 2022.

Brew Lab | 7925 Marty Street

If craft beer is your thing, this is the spot for you. Brew Lab offers its own house-made beer on tap - including a non-alcoholic pale ale - and showcases visiting taps, as well. A full menu gives you plenty of options to nosh while you drink. Don’t miss BOGO burgers for dinner on Wednesdays.

Dragon Inn | 7500 W 80th Street

With a big arrow pointing you to the door, you can’t miss this long-standing eatery serving Peking and Szechuan cuisine. Everything on the menu is worth trying, but the pork fried rice and the Szechuan Double Delight (chicken and shrimp) are favorites. Classic dishes are served in a cozy dining room and will leave you ready for your next visit.

Elsa’s Ethiopian Restaurant | 8016 Santa Fe Drive

If you’re new to Ethiopian food, Elsa’s is a great place to start. Spongy injera, a bread used in lieu of a fork to scoop up bites, accompanies favorites such as Kik Alicha (yellow split peas stewed with turmeric, garlic, and onions) and Misir Wot (split red lentils stewed with garlic, onions, and berbere sauce).

Buffalo State Pizza Co | 7901 Santa Fe Drive

It’s hard to beat a piping hot slice of New York-style pizza. Buffalo State Pizza Co offers both creative pies and classics. La Tomatina (roma tomato, fresh mozzarella, extra red sauce, roasted garlic, and fresh basil) is hard to beat. Pair it with a Scimeca Meatball and salad for a great meal.

Homer’s Coffee House | 7126 W 80th Street

Homer’s is more than just a spot to grab a coffee or sandwich - it’s a place to build community. For nearly two decades, the shop has hosted local meetings and speakers and is a great spot to catch live music with no cover charge on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Kate Smith Soiree | 7911 Santa Fe Drive

This “luxe boutique bakery” showcases handcrafted confections in its colorful shop. Special orders are welcome or you can simply stop in for a croissant or macaron. Don’t miss the opportunity to snap a pic with the gorgeous flower wall while you’re devouring your treat.

Lemongrass Thai Cuisine| 7316 W 80th Street

Fresh flavors await at this clean and bright Thai spot. For a great introduction, start with the Lemongrass Trio (egg rolls, spring rolls, and crab rangoon) and then devour the TomKha soup (coconut milk, galanga root, and lemongrass) or Gapow (minced meat stir fried with fresh basil, garlic, and bell pepper with rice and a fried egg).

Freestyle Poke | 7221 W 80th Street

I love Kansas City, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t dream about jetting off to Hawaii now and then. While that dream waits, Freestyle Poke has brought the islands to us through authentic poke - marinated fish served over rice with tasty toppings. Customize your bowl to your heart’s content and close your eyes to imagine the waves rolling in.

Maloney’s Sports Bar and Grill | 7201 W 79th Street

This is hands down the best patio and rooftop deck in Old OP. Come on a nice day with friends to catch a game or enjoy daily drink specials. If you get hungry, go for the BLTC, and don’t be shy about making it a double decker (adds a 3rd slice of toast and extra bacon).

Parisi Café| 7261 W 80th Street

If you prefer a sophisticated spot to enjoy breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up, Parisi should be at the top of your list. Parisi is passionate about both roasting and brewing. With one of the largest green coffee storage and roasting facilities in the midwest, you can be sure that your cup of joe has been prepared with care from start to finish.

Popculture Gormet Popcorn & Ice Cream | 8004 Foster

With flavors like Lemon Bar, Chipotle Ranch, BBQ, and Happy Camper S’mores, you can see why people are lining up for Popculture’s handcrafted popcorn. Don’t worry about picking blind - the tasting wall lets you try 40+ flavors before you decide what to take home. If that wasn’t enough, you can choose from 16 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream or shakes.

The Peanut | 7938 Santa Fe Drive

You know it and love it, but did you know The Peanut has a great location in downtown Overland Park? Come for the BLT and wings, but stay for the hospitality and late-night drinks. There’s always a good time to be had at this location of KC’s oldest bar and grill establishment.

Strang Hall | 7313 W 80th Street

With several chef-driven restaurants in one spot, Strang Hall is the perfect place to meet when no one can agree on a restaurant. Everyone can choose their own adventure and eat together in the center hall or or the outside lawn. Join Tuesdays - Fridays from 3:00 - 6:00 pm for happy hour drink specials.

The Other Place | 7324 W 80th Street

With its cheeky name and great food, The Other Place has won hearts as a staple destination for catching a game with pizza or a burger. Happy hour runs from 3:00 - 6:00 pm Monday through Friday, and daily specials offer great deals on crowd favorites. Need a gluten-free dish? Just ask! There’s an entire GF menu available.

The Upper Crust | 7943 Santa Fe Drive

Pie > cake forever and ever in my heart. For some of the best, head to The Upper Crust on Wednesdays through Saturdays to grab a slice, a whole pie, or a smaller “cutie pie.” The most exciting way to try The Upper Crust is with its 3rd Friday pie flights. Make sure to pre order your flight to get 3 slices for $13.

Torreador Mexican Restaurant | 7926 Floyd Street

A hidden gem with inexpensive combo plates and cold beer…What’s not to love? Follow the neon signs into this low-key space for 2-for-1 tacos on Mondays - a deal that will keep you coming back week after week.

Vintage ‘78 Wine Bar | 7251 W 80th Street

Vintage ‘78 is an upscale but relaxed wine bar that is brand new to OP. You’ll find an extensive wine list, cheese, charcuterie, and sandwiches. The Sommelier’s Blind Flight is a mix of 3 red and 3 white wines - free if you can identify them all. Needless to say I’ll be paying for the wine I enjoy.

Viona’s Italian Bistro | 7933 Marty Street

There are few things more comforting than a warm plate of baked pasta. When you need your fix, Viona’s is ready for you. Take home a family-sized lasagna to ensure you have happy campers around your dinner table.
